Midnight Messenger

Midnight gathers me
into its ever-deepening,
slowly-sinking folds.

Held there,
twisted in its dark creases,
endless yesterdays
and bleak tomorrows
taunt me.

I am stubbornly blind
to the calls of the moonlight
as a messenger arrives.

I am offered a gift.
A star.

Will I behold it
as something sharp and dangerous,
ready to burn me
even deeper into my darkness?

Or will I accept this offering,
this moment, this dawning,
this multi-directional,
ever-so-gentle starlight,
to see anew?

Is tonight a black abyss,
that feasts on my fears?

Or is it the host
of a light so tender,
so soft, so weightless,
so approachable,
that the darkness will claim me
nevermore?
